Albums are being leaked like no one's business these days.
For example, last year's Deerhunter release (one of my favorites of 2008) leaked months before a release date was even announced. Frustrated, Bradford Cox and Co. decided to record a bonus disk which was basically another full album.
Animal Collective leaked months in advance as well as a handful of others.
I guess its not a huge deal to listen to a leaked album if you're going to download it anyways but it's been bothering me. I want to listen to the album when it's intended to be listened to when everyone else is listening to it so we can enjoy it at the same time.
I have been waiting for the new grizzly bear since I saw this.
and I was bummed on the leak in early march (a little less than 3 months before the May 26 release date) as was Grizzly Bear: blog. I mean it is kinda lame, a band puts in a year and a half on an album that they truly want people to enjoy and then those people rip a low quality version. I'm not saying that I haven't been guilty of this before or trying to make people feel bad but this is why I'm still going to TRY and wait. Maybe its dumb though. Why does it have to wait until May 26 if its done now??!?!
And then I listened to the new Royksopp earlier since they are streaming it on myspace (it is great!). i didn't feel bad because they want people to hear it. Grizzly Bear, let me stream it pleeeeeaaaaassssee............

see this is my thing though... a lot of times it's leaked because people in the industry get advanced copies. it's just the nature of the industry. people are already listening to it. the people at the label, their agencies, their pr people, talent buyers, etc.
the thing is, if you are willing to support the artist by purchasing the record once it hits the shelves or buying a ticket to see their show etc. to be honest, bands do NOT make much money off of record sales. they make money off of touring and selling merchandise.
however, i have decided recently i will not be purchasing any new music via the digital downloads or cd, and strictly working on building up my vinyl collection. mp3s are just such shit quality and there is no point in buying a compressed version of something when you have the option to buy it and listen to it in high fidelity.
sorry this is so long, i just feel like it's not a big deal to listen to a leaked album if you have intentions in supporting the artist anyway.
I live for discussion, thank you for the comment holly!
in response: i agree with/know most of what you're saying (how albums get leaked/how artists make money/etc.)
It just bothers me that some people get to listen before others. I mean I've pre-ordered the album and bought the concert tickets and then all these people in "the industry" (some of whom have probably never listened to gb) listen to it and talk about how much they're enjoying it. I suppose it is the nature of the beast.
I love listening to vinyl. the veckatimest vinyl comes with a high quality digital download.
one other thing that nate told me he read. back in the day would you have scratched up your Sgt. Peppers album and then listened to it for the first time? The leak is low quality so why wouldn't you wait for the vinyl? (i think ed droste twittered something along the lines of "great now people are going to judge our work for the past year and a half on a low quality rip")
yeah the whole low quality first listen is a good point, but to be honest, and this might sound contradictory, but i don't care about listening to free music if it's not great quality. when i do cd rips i don't even rip them as wavs or aiffs, because i try to save space. hard drive conservation!
so the only time i care about high quality is when i'm actually going through the purchasing process.
and i haven't listened to the new grizzly bear yet, metric has been on repeat pretty much. and right now i'm checking out the new camera obscura.
